WP 2: Research into policy making - game simulation (finalized 2015)

WP2 Objectives:

To study organizational and process aspects in cross-sector physical activity policy making; more specifically:

1. Leadership between organizations;
2. Organizational networks;
3. Communication and organizational change process;
4. Facilitators and barriers in evidence-informed policy making.

WP2 Description of work:

The work is based on the results of WP1, systems theory approach in knowledge translation and on social science theories on organizational collaboration and change. Game simulation was done on up to three real world policy cases relevant for physical activity promotion (existing or hypothetical) in three participating countries (NL, RO, DK).

1. In the preparatory phase – a questionnaire was used to measure use of research, attitudes, opinions, experiences and intentions/behaviors related to use of evidence; readiness for change; leadership, networking and communication as well barriers and facilitators in these. This phase provided the background input for the game simulation;
2. In the group process phase - different stakeholders constructed together a cross-sectional physical activity policy in terms of plans and intentions; game simulation on ‘real life’ policy making process was used; participants were challenged to achieve specific aims playing their actual ‘real life’ roles;
3. Evaluation phase - measured change from the baseline indicators; discussion and interviews on process; lessons learned; facilitators and barriers related to organizational and cross-sector aspects as well as related to the game simulation and its applicability in enhancing evidence-informed policy making in the future.

The results were fed into WP4 for guidance development.

Deliverables:

D2.1. Interim report on the game simulation tool, feasibility and process of the intervention across sectors.
